Training: Dr. Taber-Thomas received her Master’s and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Iowa where she was trained in evidence-based assessment and treatment of children, teens, and adults, as well as training in couples therapy. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where she received specialized training in evidence-based treatments for children experiencing child abuse and neglect. This included further training in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and completion of the Interdisciplinary Training Program in Child Abuse and Neglect. From 2013 to 2015 she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh’s Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinics, where she focused on the dissemination and implementation of PCIT across Pennsylvania. Dr. Taber-Thomas has been a PCIT International Certified Therapist since 2013 and was certified as a Regional Trainer in 2017. 

Clinical Expertise: Dr. Taber-Thomas specializes in the treatment of disruptive behavior disorders in childhood (e.g., ODD, ADHD). She primarily uses PCIT and other behavioral parent training interventions when working with young children exhibiting challenging behaviors. She also specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders (e.g., separation anxiety, phobias, OCD, panic) and PTSD in children, teens and adults. She relies on several evidence-based therapies, including exposure-based therapies (e.g., Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Prolonged Exposure (PE), TF-CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Dr. Taber-Thomas also has extensive clinical experience treating relationship issues in couples, and uses Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) to address both behavioral change and acceptance processes. Dr. Taber-Thomas is available for psychoeducational and diagnostic evaluations (e.g., ADHD, Learning Disorder, giftedness).

She strives to create a safe and welcoming environment that supports exploration of the sociocultural and contextual influences on her clients’ lives. To ensure ongoing development of cultural competence, Dr. Taber-Thomas is committed to pursuing additional education and training, as well as learning from diverse communities through her community partnerships and research. 

Research: Dr. Taber-Thomas’s research focuses on the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based treatments for childhood disruptive behavior. She explores factors that influence treatment outcomes for children and families, as well as best practices for training practitioners. She is also actively involved in work focused on increasing the accessibility of evidence-based practices in underserved communities.
